Silicone Polyimide Tape(K-620)

High-Temperature PI Film Tape with Silicone Adhesive for Wave Solder Masking, Powder Coating Masking, and Electrical Insulation

For Wave Solder Masking, Powder-Coating Masking & Electrical Insulation

Silicone Polyimide Tape is made with a polyimide (PI) film backing and a high-temperature silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA). It is used in high-temperature masking and electrical insulation applications where dimensional stability, heat resistance, and reliable adhesion are required, especially in PCB solder masking, powder coating masking, and selected electrical manufacturing processes.

Typical formats: small rolls, log/jumbo rolls, sheets, and die-cut parts for production.

Silicone vs Acrylic Polyimide Tape

Decision FactorSilicone Polyimide TapeAcrylic Polyimide Tape
Best forHigher-temperature masking windows & solder maskingNon-silicone requirements, general electrical tape use cases
Temperature positioningOften selected for higher-temperature masking profiles and solder masking applications

Commonly used in lower-temperature Class F or similar process windows, depending on grade
Contamination sensitivitySome customers restrict silicone in coating/bonding linesNon-silicone acrylic grades are often used to reduce silicone contamination risk
Cost trendOften higher for high-temp silicone PSA systems (depends on thickness/volume/converting)Often lower for general acrylic PSA systems (depends on spec)

Quick recommendation:

Choose silicone PI tape when your masking window includes higher peak temperatures or solder masking tasks.

Choose acrylic PI tape when your process has a strict “no silicone” requirement or your temperature window fits acrylic grades.

Common Failures to Avoid in Solder Masking

To reduce rework and scrap in wave solder masking, watch for these common issues:

  1. Edge Lift → Solder Leakage
Cause: insufficient surface preparation, incorrect tape width, or an overly aggressive thermal profile.
Prevention: clean and dry the substrate, apply firm pressure, and choose the correct thickness and masking geometry.
  2. Adhesive Transfer After Heat Aging
Cause: excessive dwell time at high temperature, low-surface-energy substrates, or improper peel angle.
Prevention: validate the tape grade for your dwell time, peel slowly at a low angle, and run sample trials before production.
  3. Mis-Masking Due to Dimensional Drift
Cause: masking materials with poor dimensional stability.
Prevention: use polyimide film constructions with stable backing and select the correct converting tolerance.

FAQ

Why choose silicone polyimide tape instead of acrylic polyimide tape?

Silicone adhesive polyimide tape is commonly selected for higher-temperature masking profiles and solder masking applications. Acrylic adhesive polyimide tape is often preferred when a non-silicone requirement applies. Selection should be based on peak temperature, dwell time, and process chemistry. Please check the TDS for the exact grade.

Can silicone polyimide tape be used for wave solder masking?

Yes, it’s a common use case. Validate on your PCB surface finish and flux/cleaner chemistry under your real dwell time.

Will it remove cleanly after high-temperature exposure?

Residue behavior depends on substrate, heat aging time, and peel method. Validate with samples for critical applications.

How do I choose thickness (mil) for masking?

Thicker constructions generally provide better mechanical robustness and handling, while thinner tapes conform more easily to tight geometries. Share your masking geometry and temperature profile—we’ll recommend a suitable thickness.

Will silicone adhesive affect painting/coating/bonding processes?

Some lines treat silicone as a potential contaminant. If your process has a “no silicone” requirement, tell us your spec and we’ll recommend a non-silicone option and samples for qualification.
